1. Introduction
This guide identifies the requirements for certification and relevant license fees and other fees
of the companies participating in the GMO FREE TURKISH COTTON programme. It sets forth
the use of the registered trademark of the GMO Free Turkish Cotton Standard (GMO FREE
TURKISH COTTON logo) and the correct and consistent use of its related references on the
products and advertisements. The Standard and this guide complement each other.
Therefore, the rules as described in this document are binding to be able to obtain GMO FREE
TURKISH COTTON conformity.
2. Definitions
The following abbreviations and definitions are given in accordance with the purpose of use
of this guide:
Trademark Holders İzmir Commodity Exchange, National Cotton Council, Unions of
Exporters of Textiles and Raw Materials of İstanbul are owners of the legal entity
implementing all activities related to the Licensing system and the GMO Free Turkish Cotton
registered trademark.
Accredited Certification Body: Accredited certification bodies implementing the certification
and inspection process under the relevant content of GMO FREE TURKISH COTTON and
accredited by the TRADEMARK HOLDERS İzmir Commodity Exchange, National Cotton
Council, Unions of Exporters of Textiles and Raw Materials of İstanbul. You can access to the

Entrepreneur: Merchants or retailers certified by the certification body, which process,
produce and commercialise the certified products.
Product: Textiles, cotton seed materials and food products which entrepreneurs certified by
an accredited certification body produce pursuant to this standard (end or by products).
Use of the Logo on a Product: GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo used on the certified products
in a manner in which the seller/buyer and end consumer in the supply chain of food, cotton
seed materials and textiles can see when they purchase them.
Product Label (use for promotional purposes): logo used on the GMO Free Turkish Cotton
products presented in the product catalogues, websites, advertisements and other
publications (by those companies doing web-based business).
Other uses of the logo: Use of the GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo on business cards,
letterheads or similar promotional materials which would not directly refer to the product.
Standard: GMO Free Turkish Cotton Standard.
Certificate: document issued for an inspected product, enterprise and merchant.
Certificate of Scope: document issued for a definite period of time, which provides the
details of the prod uct, enterprise and activities certified on the basis of the certification
standard for the entrepreneur and which shows that they are included in the inspection
mechanism of the Standard.
Transaction Certificate: document used in the trading of the certified products produced by
certified entrepreneurs and providing traceability.
3. Lisensing Terms
3.1 GMO Free Turkish Cotton Products
A certified entrepreneur holds a license for the use of approved labels during the validity of
his certificate provided that the provisions of this guide are complied with. The “Label
Approval Form” is completed and submitted to the Certification Body for the approval of the
labels.
An entrepreneur must keep the records of the GMO Free Turkish Cotton products which he
produces, including the specifications and quantities thereof and make them available for
inspection by the Certification Body. Certification Body must assess and approve the labels
related to the entrepreneur’s use of the GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo together with the
Label Approval Forms before they are released for use.
Label Approval: may only be given to the entrepreneur by the Certification Body with which
he works.
4. Labelling of Certified Products:
4.1 Use of Labels on Products/Use of GMO Free Turkish Cotton Logo on
Products.
GMO-Free Turkish Cotton logo used on the certified products in a manner in which the
seller/buyer and end consumer in the supply chain of textiles can see when they purchase
them.
Products purchased with the GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo may not be marketed by any
merchants who do not have licenses. And the trading merchant must have a license as per
this standard.
GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo must be printed together with the relevant label grade at all
times: “GMO Free” or “made with (x%) GMO Free”.
In addition to this working, the name, abbreviation and/or logo of the Certification Body
certifying the products and, under the GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo, the license number of
the entrepreneur who has been certified or that of the purchasing certified entrepreneur
(merchant and/or retailer seller) must be added.
4.1.1 Product Labelling
Logos can be used as follows on the labels to be used on products certified according to the
standard.

Corresponding terms in the language of the country where the products are sold may also be
used. The user may use an alternative format for any additional information but all
requirements of labelling must be complied with.
One must make sure that any confusion will not be caused between any certified product and
non-certified product in the use of the logo for promotional and advertising purposes.
4.1.2 Use of Certified Products in Combination with Other Materials.
In case the GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo is used in combination with any other material, the
appropriate one of the following label specimens may be used.

4.2 Conditions for Use of Logo on Product Labels
On the certified product labels, the phrase “GMO Free Turkish Cotton Standard” may also be
used instead of the logo. In case this option is chosen, the label in question must be
approved as per the label approval procedure. Reference must be made to the Certification
Body and the Entrepreneur’s license number on the label.
4.3 End Products not bearing GMO Free Turkish Cotton label
If any end products produced in compliance with the Standard have not been labelled in the
manner as prescribed in paragraphs 4.1 and 4.2 herein at the stage of launching to the
market, such products are not considered to be certified GMO FREE TURKISH COTTON
products. Therefore, they cannot be supplied, marketed or sold with the certified product
reference.
4.4 Reference to products produced without (complete)compliance with
Standard.
Issues which must be taken into consideration in order not to have any misunderstanding as
to the fact that a product is certified and in order not to make any mistakes in the
certification of the product:
In case certification only takes place at the initial processes (ginning, thread, etc.) and if the
product is processed at an enterprise which is not included in the supply chain at any of the
subsequent stages, then the products so obtained will not be certified. (For instance, noncertified
dyeing-washing-printing, etc. at textile enterprises; likewise, oil extraction, packing,
marketing at a non-certified enterprise; similarly, failure to carry out any legal procedures
related to the seed certification regulation prior to launching the cottonseeds to the market
as seeds.) Inspection and certification procedures mush have been implemented for all
activities in the supply chain; otherwise, reference may not be made to certification on the
products.
All stages in the production of the end product and all actors in the trade chain must be
inspected and certified as per the rules of this standard.
5. Requirements for Companies that launch certified products to the market under
GMO Free Turkish Cotton labels.
Companies marketing certified products under GMO Free Turkish Cotton labels
5.1 GMO Free Turkish Cotton products sold in the supply chain
Conditions required for selling the certified and labelled end products in the supply chain:
– Entrepreneur (Producer, Operator and Marketer, Importer, Exporter, etc.)
must have been inspected and certified so that he may take place in the supply
chain.
– Formats to be used on the labels must have been approved by the Certification
Body before they are used. Non-approved labels cannot be used.
5.2. Marketing of End Product
A retailer must make sure of the following before he sells any end products marketed
as certified and labelled:
– The final operator producing the end product in the supply chain must have
been inspected and certified as per the standard.
– The labels to be used must have been approved by the certification body.
Non-approved labels cannot be used.
– If a retailer is to sell any certified products, then he is recommended to
design the product labels and the materials to be used in packing all by his
own self.
– If a retailer also sells on wholesale basis, then he must be a license holder
pursuant to the standard. Therefore, he must be inspected and certified.
6. Use of Logo Certification Bodies:
Certification bodies approved to the standard can use the logo in the documents they will issue
(Certificate of Scope, Transaction Certificate, etc.).
7. Other uses of GMO Free Turkish Cotton logo
As the Logo represents the Standard, it is of a binding nature. Therefore, the Logo must be
used in compliance with its original and must not cause any confusion. It may be used to
provide Trademark Holder organisations, inspection and certification bodies, entrepreneurs
(producers, operators, merchants -to be used on their certified products, dealers, importers,
exporters, etc.), non-governmental organisations, press and media organs and consumers
with information on condition that it is used properly.
Any confusion must not be caused at the time of the promotion of any certified and noncertified
products. Non-certified products must not be introduced as if they are certified.
8. Misuse of Logo
Trademark Holders and/or Accredited Certification Bodies will take any and all corrective
and/or legal actions against any unauthorised or misleading uses of the GMO FREE TURKISH
COTTON logo in product declarations, promotions, catalogues or other contexts and/or any
and all legal actions including the publication of the violation in order to protect the reliability
of the GMO FREE TURKISH COTTON trademark.
Trademark Holders and Accredited Certification Bodies will initiate any corrective and legal
action against any misleading use of the logo. For the reliability of the trademark, any
violations so identified and any sanctions applied shall be disclosed in the website of the
standard by the Trademark Holders.
In case it is found out that the logo has been used in an unauthorised manner or in any
manner which will be misleading for consumers, a monetary penalty may also be applied. In
the Trademark Holder’s discretion, a fine between TRY 2.500,- and TRY 25.000, – will be
applicable. The amount of such monetary penalty will be updated in the periods as deemed
necessary by the Executive Board.
9. Design
Any forms and wording to be used in designing must be allowed to be distinctly seen by
bringing the Logo and the wording GMO Free Turkish Cotton and label grade to the
forefront. Size and location of the label must have been elected in a manner in which the
relevant certification body, license number and marking of the product will be clearly visible.
In order not to experience any legibility issue, the logo (including the wording GMO Free
Turkish Cotton) must not be smaller than 10 mm.
While changing the size of the label, its proportions must not be changed.
Any colour has not been determined for the logo and the wording to be used on the label
but the whole content must be printed in the same colour. It is preferable that the words
should be printed in the Calibri font.
Note: Original logo of the standard will be submitted to the Accredited Certification Bodies
by the Trademark Holders and to the certified entrepreneurs by the certification body.
